Government Burdens
Taxes, fees, and regulations are the worst they have ever been.
All issues
Tases and fees from the state are way up and State government has grown massively. Today the state carries bilion dollar shortfalls. Colorado Springs has a sales tax rate near that of New York City, yet still needed to cut services, furlough employees, and tap into its reserves under the current Mayor. As Mayor, I will reduce both fiscal and time burdens levied on our citizens. I will work locally and regionally to reduce these burdens.
What we will do
- First and foremost, the City needs to be more efficient. Stan and the team achieved this for the County and we will achieve it again for the City. I am professionally trained in finding efficiencies. This is what my Industrial Engineering degree is about. There is no single solution. It's about finding hundreds of smaller things that ultimately free up funds to eliminate furloughs, improve services, better fund public safety, and accelerate road repairs.
- As Mayor, we will focus on what governments are best at. And we will support private action to address community issues. A better structured team of public and private action will deliver all the outcomes we really need.
- Every time the state legislature sends local government an unfunded mandate, that's another road, pothole, or law enforcement officer we cannot fund. It's unfair and wrong. As a County Commissioner, we fought unfunded mandates with some success. As Mayor, i will build a coalition of municipalities and counties to fight unfunded mandates from the state. Basically, if the state wants to do it, they should fund it. Together, we will hold them to this.
